Hihi,
My name’s PC (or K), one of the producers behind Abi. I’m excited to tell you that on July 8th, 2022, the long-awaited continuation of Abi’s story will be released as DLC! At last, the narrative will be complete and our promise to everyone will finally be fulfilled. For now, I would like to extend my sincere apologies to everyone for the long delay — this was due to staffing changes as well as the ongoing pandemic. Developing the new content has been a unique experience for us, seeing as we had to weather two different years of working from home (2020 and 2022). Our artists and programmers have spent so long under lockdown, listening to the percussion of the washing machine while working, that they have become accustomed to making the game to a beat.
In the upcoming installment of the story Abi, DD and Jamie succeed in making it to Metropolis, the city they heard about in Chapters 1 to 5. Will Jamie be restored to his former self? Will DD find his little birdie friend? Well, Metropolis is said to be the place where dreams come true! Players can also explore new areas, as well as learn more about the backgrounds of several main characters. Everyone is welcome to come and experience this next stage of the journey.
Way back when we first started on Abi, one of the producers, Max, had a vision of pure exploration. The initial story took place in a world totally without humans, so much so that we even considered letting Abi have a little snail to chat with, or having Abi and DD just play in a river. The purpose of this would be to allow the players to purely experience and appreciate the rich artwork of every scene. Our ideas evolved as time went on, however, and we began thinking about using our little robot Abi to explore the giant concept of human nature itself. Almost imperceptibly, Abi changed into its current form: from a game concerned with pure exploration into a story-driven adventure. Maybe that’s what “going with the flow” means.
I guess you could say that my inspiration for Abi comes from what I experience in my daily life, the things I see and hear around me. I’m not a hardcore sci-fi fan, nor am I a mecha nerd. I like to tell relatable, everyday stories all connected by an overarching theme or idea. For example, my inspiration for Chapter 5’s Collector came from the poor pets abandoned by their owners in real life. These animals wait patiently and loyally for their human whom they love with all their being. But ultimately, no one comes, and they cannot wait forever. Tortured by this agony, they’re called “crazy” when the pain gets too much and they suffer a mental breakdown. Of course, these sorts of stories or statements are never explicitly linked to anything specific in the game, because everyone is different, and everyone is the hero of their own story. I just hope that these fictions, built from reality, resonate with the players, even if just a little bit. It doesn’t matter if they stop and contemplate on their pets, or their friends or spouses, or even human nature as a whole — the aim is to get people thinking. That is honestly all that we, as the developers, could wish for. Being able to make something that resonates with other people is the greatest proof that you’re not alone.
I’ve been following the player community and have always been deeply moved by everyone’s enthusiasm. We intend to finally honor our promise, made way back at the beginning of this journey, to offer updates free of charge. However, as a token of our appreciation for the community’s continued support, and an apology for being four years late, we have also decided to make the whole game free for the first month, not just the DLC! We hope everyone enjoys their adventures with Abi. But that’s not all — we’ve also moved the paywall from Chapter 2 all the way to Chapter 6, making the original Abi 1 story completely free. Even after the initial month, everyone can enjoy the story of Abi 1 free, forever.
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, we hope that everyone enjoys their time with our Abi.
